A Note on Youth Lacrosse Sticks
Many youth parents wonder, “What’s the best lacrosse stick for my child?” As parents and coaches, we recall simpler times with fewer options. Nowadays, beginner lacrosse sticks offer remarkable designs compared to professional-level sticks from two decades ago.
For reference beginner sticks include the STX Stallion 200, Warrior Evo Youth, Maverik Charger, and StringKing Mark 1.
Youth players can thrive with a beginner stick. These sticks come with wider heads, which make catching easier and assists when scooping up ground balls. They are durable and versatile for both defense and attack. They are also a cost friendly option.
Advanced heads may be lighter, made from more expensive plastic polymers, and feature more sidewall holes for better pocket customization. These nuances can enhance specific techniques like defense, ground ball collection, and either harder or more precise shooting and passing.
One downside to beginner sticks is the deterioration of the mesh and pockets. As the stringing and pocket wear out, it can affect the stick’s throwing consistency, which might hinder kids’ confidence, growth and development. Short, light passes may result in more downward throws, while harder throws might release higher or hit off the plastic.
The solution is to replace the factory mesh and stringing for a more consistent pocket. You can have heads re-strung at sporting goods stores like Dick’s or Lacrosse Unlimited, or do it yourself. Your son’s coach can also provide guidance.
Bottom line: Beginner lacrosse heads are beneficial for youth players, but the mesh and pocket may require re-stringing. Check your son’s stick after each season to ensure it still throws consistently. A consistent throwing stick helps build confidence and makes the game more enjoyable for kids.
